Half the fun of the Witches Ride is deciding who you’re going to be this year. There’s no dress code, no wrong answer, and no such thing as too much glitter. Whether you’re going full wicked-glam or just grabbing a pointy hat on your way out the door, here are a few ideas to get the wheels turning.

New to the Coven? Start Here
First ride? Welcome. A few things we wish someone had told us before our first year:
- You’ll be on your feet and on your bike from 3:30 to 7:30, so pick shoes you can actually pedal and walk in. Save the six-inch heels for the after party.
- St. Francisville evenings in October can turn cool once the sun drops — a cape or shawl looks witchy and keeps you warm.
- Whatever you put on your head, make sure it stays on your head. Wind plus a downhill equals a runaway hat, so bobby pins are your friend.
- You don’t need a store-bought costume. A black dress, a few purple accents, and a hat you decorated at the kitchen table will fit right in.
The point isn’t to look perfect — it’s to show up, have fun, and raise money for a cause that matters.
Costume Themes to Steal
Classic Witch
Pointy hat, flowing black, and as many layers of tulle and lace as you can carry. Work in some purple to tip your hat to The Purple House Foundation.
Coven Coordination
Round up your friends and pick one color or theme. A matching coven photographs beautifully and always turns heads at the line-up.
Glam Ghoul
Sequins, a feather boa, and a little face glitter. Spooky optional, sparkle mandatory.
Punny Witch
Lean into the wordplay — a “Basic Witch” with a pumpkin latte, or a “Sandwich” if you’re feeling ridiculous. The judges love a good groan.
Deck Out Your Ride
Your bike is part of the costume. Weave battery-powered fairy lights through the spokes and basket, tie ribbons and bows to the handlebars, and clip a little broom to the frame. Bringing a golf cart? Go big — think rolling haunted house. There’s a Best Decorated Ride award on the line, and folks take it seriously.
Don’t Forget
- Comfortable, closed-toe shoes you can actually pedal in
- A light or some reflectors — the ride runs into the evening
- Water and a small bag for your stamp map
- A phone or small wallet you can carry on a bike
- Your best cackle
